Redefining Woman in Country Music

Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, and Dolly Parton bring out images of a traditional country singers adorned in western-style dresses and music. These women are all extraordinary singers, performers, and artists.

However, today, new artists are reshaping and gradually changing our perceptions of women in country music.Country music is not just about sorrows and broken relationships any longer.

In the 1990’s, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and Lee Ann Womack initially opened the doors with their own brand of country music splashed with sex appeal. Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland give people a different, unique and bolder picture of female country artists.

Faith Hill

Faith Hill is known as one of the country music industry’s top vocalists with a powerful voice. Her nineteen-year career has been highlighted by the sale of 30 million records around the world, thru which time she has had thirteen “number one” singles and twenty “number one” videos. She is the only female singer to have her last three studio collections – 1999’s BREATHE, 2002’s CRY and 2005’s FIREFLIES – all debuted successively at #1 on Billboard’s Top Pop Album Chart and Country Chart.

Faith is married to fellow country music superstar Tim McGraw.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain has turned into the most prominent country music singer since Garth Brooks.  Shania and her producer-husband, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, made a commercial juggernaut with her second album, The Woman in Me. The record turned into a multi-platinum sensation, topping at number five on the pop charts and in the long run selling nine million copies in America alone. Also she was the first country music singer to completely endeavor  MTV’s style.  She turned into a country music phenomenon.

Lee Ann Womack

From being a professional songwriter, Lee Ann Womack turned into one of the breakout contemporary country stars of 1997 with her eponymous debut album. Lee Ann Womack’s album was released in May 1997, and not long after it reached at the Top Ten on the country chart. Her album, I Hope You Dance followed in mid-2000. Something Worth Leaving Behind was released in mid-2002, and it was a certain that Lee Ann was moving  into the country mainstream for good. In 2003,she earned a little part on the CBS show, The District. Additionally Lee Ann earned two Grammy nods one for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for Something Worth Leaving Behind and the other for Best Vocal Collaboration (Country) for her two part harmony with Willie Nelson on “Mendocino County Line.”

Miranda Lambert

She’s the reigning country’s female vocalist of the year for five years in Academy of Country Music. Miranda also won the prized album of the year trophy from Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music for her second record, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and for her third, Revolution. In she accepted the top country female vocal performance honor at the Grammy Awards for “The House That Built Me.”

Miranda was named one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People and one of Maxim’s Hottest Women of Country.

Hillary Scott

Lead vocalist with the country group Lady Antebellum. Her band released successive #1 albums: Lady Antebellum, Need You Now, and Own The Night. She auditioned for American Idol twice before and co-composed successful songs for singers like Sara Evans and Blake Shelton before leading to her success.

Hillary married Nashville-based drummer, Chris Tyrrell on January 7, 2012 after two years of dating.

Jennifer Nettles

With a presentation of captivating tunes, dynamic vocals, and wonderful style in an enthusiastically charged live setting, Jennifer Nettles and her band, Sugarland truly successful throughout the mid- to late ’90s.  She also recorded a duet on the country version of Bon Jovi’s 2006 single “Who Says You can’t Go Home” which became a number one hit on the Billboard country charts.

Carrie Underwood

Carried Marie Underwood rose to fame as the winner of the fourth season of American Idol in 2005. She has won various awards including six Grammy Awards, sixteen Billboard Music Awards, eleven Academy of Country Music Awards and seven American Music Awards. Carrie also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in the movie The Chronicles of Narnia in 2010. She is described my many music critics as Country Music’s reigning Queen.
