Oddball Comedy Tour

oddball comedyIt’s probably the most talked about comedy festivals of the year, and it’ll be interesting to find out just how the comedians alter their styles facing what is expected to be many chaotic crowds at various venues on the tour.

Stand-up shows typically involve small rooms, two-drink minimums with the prospect of disturbances from indiscriminate hecklers. But the conventions of live comedy don’t seem to pertain to superstars Louis C.K. and Sarah Silverman, especially because the two talents are co-headliners in the traveling tour called Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival.

Here’s a good look at the various funny folks everyone will be watching:

hannibal burressHannibal Buress: He touts a remarkable writing resume, with past gigs at Saturday Night Live and Adult Swim. He’s found his sweet spot with pop-culture-savvy stand-up performances, sharing insight on subjects ranging from bachelor party etiquette to the inner thoughts of rats.  Hannibal Buress is a comedian, actor, writer, musician, magician, and poker dealer from Chicago. If anyone is going to produce rich comedic fodder inspired from the audience, it is this person.  He’s appeared on television a lot. At least 10 times. Actually it’s way more than that. He’s the cohost of The Eric Andre Show on Adult Swim. He’s a cast member on Broad City on Comedy Central. He’s had failed tv show deals of his own. He tours regularly doing stand up comedy. There’s other stuff on google that you can find. Have a nice day.

Whitney CummingsWhitney Cummings: At 32, Cummings already knows the highs and lows of the industry. The woman’s triumphs include co-creating the CBS hit sitcom 2 Broke Girls, writing and performing at Comedy Central’s famous roasts (including ones for Flavor Flav and the late Joan Rivers), and telling jokes on the panel of the E! talker Chelsea Lately. Her own series projects, Whitney on NBC and Love You, Mean It on E!, didn’t fare quite as well. Still, the Oddball crowd should find plenty to enjoy within her no-holds-barred material concerning the double standards placed on females and the perils of the dating scene.

marc maronMarc Maron: Despite Louis C.K.’s position at the top of the bill, 50-year-old Maron may very well be regarded the father figure of the Oddball crew, regularly kicking out world-weary wisdom accumulated through his numerous years of thoughtful talk-radio hosting and podcasting. The excitement of his WTF With Marc Maron podcast offers a supremely entertaining backdrop to the autobiographical IFC comedy, Maron, in which the comedian struggles with close relationships and particular shortcomings.  I have a hard time describing what I do or what I am up there on stage. I’ve been called: neurotic, a story teller, heady, cerebral, angry, brilliant, bad, a problem, a cultural critic, a satirist, fucking funny, an important voice, etc.

sarah silvermanSarah Silverman: The 43-year-old actress and comedian made her name known while mastering an unanticipated onstage blend of cute and subversive, turning questionable sexual and racial material on its head with a wink and a smile. She perfected that stage persona on late-night talk shows; within her side-splitting, self-titled Comedy Central series; and in the full-length comedy movie Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic. But in 2013, Silverman mostly shelved the shock-princess character and instead pointed her comedic lens at the smaller absurdities in life. Check out the HBO special she filmed in front of just a few dozen people, We Are Miracles, and you’ll see shades of Rivers, George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld emerging. Of course, a shorter set and an untamed crowd at Oddball could possibly send Silverman into her silliest territory. No harm there.

louis c.kLouis C.K.: A lot more than merely a stand-up comic, Louis C.K. has developed year after year into one of America’s most recognized and quoted cultural commentators. Whether he’s railing about the unintended results of personal technology or lamenting the different irritations of parenthood, his hilariously grounded perspective hits home for people of many ages. Louis himself would probably balk at the notion that he’s so essential, but his humility and shrewd self-deprecation are what make him so relatable from the beginning. He will get less than an hour onstage at Oddball, so don’t expect the kinds of lengthy considerations seen in his stand-up specials or his groundbreaking FX show, Louie. Instead look for a lighthearted, laser-focused set that will make you hoping for much more.
